Why you should eat more calories and not more protein in your diet
Dr. Richard Sebi, a leading researcher on the effectiveness of dietary protein and the health benefits of eating it, is urging people to eat more protein and fewer carbs in their diets to help them meet their nutritional needs.
In an interview with Fortune, Sebi said that people who have chronic disease, such as arthritis or rheumatoids, should aim to consume around 4,500 to 5,000 grams of protein per day, or about 30 to 40 grams of carbohydrates.
“We’ve known for a while now that people with chronic disease have more than twice the risk of developing rheumatic heart disease as those who don’t have those diseases,” Sebi says.
“But what we really needed to do was to understand what the mechanisms are, and how they affect health.”
Dr. Sebi recommends eating more protein because of the beneficial effects it has on cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, immune function and inflammation.
“There’s a lot of evidence that you need a certain amount of protein to do well in certain situations, like the heart and in your gut, but in others it’s not the case,” Seabi says.
“It’s the combination of the two.”

He also recommends beef, lamb, pork and chicken breasts.
“The more meat, the better,” he says.
You may have to eat less of certain types of meat.
“We know that a lot is the result of a lot more processed food,” SeBI says.
Some people say they like to get protein in their diet because it helps to boost the immune system, but that’s not always the case.
“I find that people tend to like to be more focused on protein because they think it’s easier to digest,” Seci says.
But if you eat more than you should, your body may not be able to break down the food to get the necessary amino acids.
“So, if you don’t digest enough protein, your digestive system may be able’t get the nutrients,” he explains.
To increase the health benefit of protein, Seabi recommends consuming foods with a lot protein, especially eggs.
“You need to have more of those proteins, especially from eggs,” he advises.
