Keto diet is one of the most effective dietary approaches to combat chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, but not all patients are ready for it.
Here are the most common concerns people have about it.
The first concern is about its effect on blood glucose levels.
Ketones help regulate blood glucose and prevent the body from going into ketosis.
It also helps to improve energy levels.
But what about how ketones affect the body’s ability to burn fat?
Ketones are converted into carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), which is the primary fuel for the body.
This process makes it more efficient.
This is a key factor that drives the benefits of a ketogenic diet, says Dr Arun Rana, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a ketogenetic specialist.
“Keto diets have been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in many studies,” he says.
However, some researchers have suggested that ketones are also associated with increased inflammation, which can lead to heart problems and even cancer.
This makes it hard to recommend a ketone-rich diet for patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
So is it safe to go on a ketones-rich ketogenic low carb diet?
There are no definitive studies on the effects of ketones on blood pressure, cholesterol levels or blood glucose.
And there is no evidence that ketogenic diets reduce the risks of developing certain cancers, says Rana.
But, he adds, ketones can boost metabolism, which may improve blood pressure.
So the answer is yes, says Prof John Aravosis, MD of the University College London, a professor of metabolic medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit.
“A ketogenic keto-restricted diet is safe for people with existing cardiovascular diseases.
Ketone bodies, which are the main fuel for your body, are produced naturally in the body and can be metabolised by the liver,” he adds.”
A keto, or ketogenic, diet may also help reduce inflammation and help you get more energy.
There’s no evidence it would cause cancer, so there’s no reason to restrict it.”
Another concern is the effects on the immune system.
While ketones help the body to burn fats, they can increase the risk for cancer.
It may also increase the chance of developing chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, and the need for immunotherapy.
Ketosis also increases the risk that the body will become chronically sick.
The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends people with cardiovascular diseases or diabetes who are at high risk for developing diabetes and other diseases take a low-carb diet.
But experts caution that people should be cautious about following this approach.
“You shouldn’t switch from a ketosis-rich low carb, or any other low carb pattern to a ketotic one because you can have a severe effect on the body,” says Araviss.
“But a low carb approach may be useful for people who are in very high risk of developing some of the conditions that you mention.”
People should also be aware that ketosis is not necessarily a good idea for people at higher risk of disease,” says Ranas.

So if you want to get your blood sugar levels under control after a low carbohydrate diet, you may want to consider going back to eating regular vegetables and fruit.
“It’s probably best to just cut out meat, dairy and sugar entirely,” says Dr Rana who advises cutting out dairy, red meat and sugar completely.
“The ketogenic high carbohydrate diet is a fantastic way to eat healthily and get into ketones.
It is safe and it has a long history of being used as a treatment for cancer, and it is a great way to get in ketones,” says Professor Aravides.
